1962 -1980

In 1964, less than a decade after the golfing greats had graced Wentworth’s fairways in the Ryder Cup and Canada Cup, Mark McCormack, founder of IMG, dreamed his idea of a World Matchplay Championship. Wentworth’s West Course was to be its home.

Victories down the years from the likes of Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Seve Ballesteros, Greg Norman, Nick Faldo and Ernie Els – great players from successive generations – helped Wentworth achieve further international acclaim as a championship golfing venue.
